Arthroscopic Partial Meniscectomy: MR Imaging for Prediction of Outcome in Middle-Aged and Elderly Patients

Abstract: Poorer clinical outcome after APM was associated with greater severity of cartilage loss and bone marrow edema in the same compartment as the meniscal tear, greater severity of meniscal extrusion, greater overall severity of joint degeneration, a meniscal root tear, and a longer meniscal tear at preoperative MR imaging.

“…Varus alignment, old age, high BMI, concomitant cartilage loss, and greater severity of joint degeneration have been documented as poor prognostic factors of partial meniscectomy in middle-aged or older patients242526). However, in younger patients, prognostic factors are not determined yet.…”

“…Worse outcomes after meniscectomy are associated with 5 findings: greater severity of cartilage loss and bone marrow edema in the same compartment as the meniscus tear; greater severity of meniscus extrusion; greater overall severity of joint degeneration; a meniscus root tear; and a longer meniscus tear. 111 MR imaging findings Diagnosis of recurrent meniscus tears can be challenging, both by clinical evaluation and by MR imaging.…”

“…The consequences of a false positive finding are serious and can cause unnecessary arthroscopy or arthrotomy, which increases operation pains and economic burden for patients. Various possible complications could be generated because of unnecessary operations (De Smet and Tuite, 2006;Kijowski et al, 2011;Tokuda et al, 2012).…”
