Artificial Deviation of a Small Inlet (Bevano, Northern Italy): Prediction of Future Evolution and Planning of Management Strategies Using Open-Source Community Coastal Models

Abstract: The Bevano river flows into the northern Adriatic Sea in a microtidal-low energy wave environment. The river mouth was diverted artificially in 2006 to contrast dune erosion and decrease inland river flooding. The intervention can be considered as a low impact one as the engineering works were constructed in timber and the possibility of the inlet naturally changing its course was contemplated. An ensemble of hydraulic/morphological scenarios was simulated using data from field surveys and a coupled numerical … Show more

“…Since then the system has been reasonably stable, also because the northern bank is partially protected by environmentally friendly timber training structures. Only minor works of repairs were done in the last few years (Ciavola et al 2012). In the stratigraphic classification, the deposit outcropping of the post-evaporite succession are part of the Supersynthem Emiliano-Romagnolo, which is the stratigraphic unit that includes the late-Quaternary sediments of the Po Plain (Ricci Lucchi et al, 1982).…”

“…Carniel et al (2011) and Ciavola et al (2012) described coastal processes in the Bevano river region, an area of the NW Adriatic Sea characterized by a microtidal regime and low wave energy, by a high-resolution implementation of the coupled wave-currents-sediment transport COAWST system. Benetazzo et al (2013) studied the effect of Wave-Current Interaction (WCI) phenomena on ocean circulation and wave dynamics in the NA Sea (Italy), implementing the system on a parent grid (with horizontal resolution of 2.0 km) covering the whole basin and a one-way nested child grid resolving the northern area (Gulf of Venice) at a resolution of 0.5 km.…”
