Artificial intelligence and digital twins in power systems: Trends, synergies and opportunities

Abstract: Artificial Intelligence (AI) promises solutions to the challenges raised by the digitalization of power grids and their assets. Decision-making, forecasting and even operational optimization of grids and assets are just some of the solutions that AI algorithms can provide to operators, utilities and vendors. Nevertheless, barriers such as access to quality datasets, interpretability, repeatability, and availability of computational resources currently limit the extent of practical AI implementations. At the sa… Show more

“…The S-NEM2300 is also envisioned to serve as a basic unit for power system digital twins (PSDT), a research area with growing interest and considerable potential [41]. For instance, integrating the S-NEM2300 with real-time and historical data and artificial intelligence in the OP5033XG can form a testbed system that could be used by the research community to study digital twins, test digital twin applications, or as a prototype for an industrial PSDT [42].…”

“…It should be noted that this DT partitioning ensures that the digital model is continuously updated to capture the most recent network structure and characteristics. From there, the developed DT is utilised to perform hundreds of what-if scenarios on the underlying network, and this is performed without affecting its physical counterpart and while using and recording the results to improve the planning, prevention of issues, and optimising the operation of the network [52]. This DT has the capability to simulate network behaviour under different scenarios, such as faults, and it can train ML algorithms for fault identification and location.…”

“…According to a previous international conference, the widespread application of newgeneration information technology is a crucial component in achieving sustainability, as it deeply involves the manufacturing industry [1]. This extensive application will significantly drive advancements in the field of smart manufacturing, thereby enhancing the levels of intelligence, networking, and digitalization within the manufacturing sector [2]. This, in turn, creates valuable opportunities for the realization of sustainability objectives.…”
