Artificial Intelligence as a Socratic Assistant for Moral Enhancement

Abstract: The moral enhancement of human beings is a constant theme in the history of humanity. Today, faced with the threats of a new, globalised world, concern over this matter is more pressing. For this reason, the use of biotechnology to make human beings more moral has been considered. However, this approach is dangerous and very controversial. The purpose of this article is to argue that the use of another new technology, AI, would be preferable to achieve this goal. Whilst several proposals have been made on how … Show more

“…From the very beginning, the contemporary debate on moral enhancement has predominantly been a discussion about moral bio-enhancement, that is, the ethical considerations of using biotechnologies such as gene editing, pharmacological drugs, or neurological interventions in order to improve our moral behavior (Douglas, 2008 , 2013 ; Faust, 2008 ; Persson and Savulescu, 2008 , 2012 ; DeGrazia, 2014 ; Harris, 2016 ). More recently, moral enhancement through the use of Artificial Intelligence is increasingly being considered (Whitby, 2011 ; Savulescu and Maslen, 2015 ; Klincewizc, 2016 ; Giubilini and Savulescu, 2017 ; Lara and Deckers, 2020 ). One of the aims of this research paper consists of broadening the horizons of the moral enhancement debate.…”

“…A person will become more confident in artificial intelligence if the corresponding system will provide up-to-date statistics on successfully completed work, as well as demonstrate the connection of its recommendations with the goals of the person it interacts with [44]. Here, different indicators of productivity and effectiveness can be defined, for example, the number of customers satisfied with the service with a particular robot, the proportion of successfully solved problems, or the average processing time of application.…”

“…In this view, by challenging the moral views of unenhanced humans, intelligent machines could lead individuals towards improved moral thinking (see e.g. [44,45]). A similar idea could be taken to apply in this context too.…”
