Artificial Intelligence in Cancer Research: Trends, Challenges and Future Directions

Abstract: The World Health Organization (WHO), in their 2022 report, identified cancer as one of the leading causes of death, accounting for about 16% of deaths worldwide. The Cancer-Moonshot community aims to reduce the cancer death rate by half in the next 25 years and wants to improve the lives of cancer-affected people. Cancer mortality can be reduced if detected early and treated appropriately. Cancers like breast cancer and cervical cancer have high cure probabilities when treated early in accordance with best pra… Show more

“…There are many limitations to using NLP models. One limitation of using NLP models to identify documentation and patient symptoms is a lack of consensus on the keywords and jargon used, which vary between clinicians and institutes [57]. A major source of false positives and false negatives is not correctly defining and formatting search words in the keyword library [57].…”

“…One limitation of using NLP models to identify documentation and patient symptoms is a lack of consensus on the keywords and jargon used, which vary between clinicians and institutes [57]. A major source of false positives and false negatives is not correctly defining and formatting search words in the keyword library [57]. Consequently, the keyword library must also be regularly updated and appropriately formatted to decrease false positives and false negatives [58].…”

“…As highlighted in this review, advances in computing permeate artificial intelligence approaches, machine learning algorithms [ 162 ], personalized targeting [ 163 ], and several other approaches. Broad access to low cost computational tools will expand specialized computational models in the study of cancer and PGCCs [ 162 , 163 ].…”
