Artificially altered gravity elicits cell homeostasis imbalance in planarian worms, and cerium oxide nanoparticles counteract this effect

Abstract: Gravity alterations elicit complex and mostly detrimental effects on biological systems. Among these, a prominent role is occupied by oxidative stress, with consequences for tissue homeostasis and development. Studies in altered gravity are relevant for both Earth and space biomedicine, but their implementation using whole organisms is often troublesome. Here we utilize planarians, simple worm model for stem cell and regeneration biology, to characterize the pathogenic mechanisms brought by artificial gravity … Show more

“…We considered as blastema the unpigmented region below the wound epithelium; blastemal margin was manually highlighted by the operator in blind. As described in Salvetti et al [58], in order to normalize differences in blastema area that might depend on the use of animals of different sizes, we chose the ratio between blastema area and total body area as the most appropriate parameter to evaluate effects on tissue regeneration. 5FU was purchased from Sigma (F6627, Sigma-Aldrich) and diluted in DMSO to obtain a 400 mM stock solution.…”

“…This experiment utilized a gravity simulator and discovered that CNPs were able to mitigate the growth delays for the worms that is usually associated under reduced gravity environment. This is most likely due to the oxidative stress that this environment results in and the NPs's role in mitigating this effect (Salvetti et al, 2021). While this experiment does not consider space radiation, the role of oxidative stress in the space environment should be considered in developing therapeutic solutions.…”

“…Salvetti et-al. [3] conducted experiments to study the effects of artificially altered gravities on cells and microorganisms. For this purpose, they utilized a random positioning machine to simulate microgravity Indonesian J Elec Eng & Comp Sci ISSN: 2502-4752  and a large-diameter centrifuge to simulate hypergravity.…”
