ARTS, an AR Tourism System, for the Integration of 3D Scanning and Smartphone AR in Cultural Heritage Tourism and Pedagogy

Abstract: Interactions between cultural heritage, tourism, and pedagogy deserve investigation in an as-built environment under a macro- or micro-perspective of urban fabric. The heritage site of Shih Yih Hall, Lukang, was explored. An Augmented Reality Tourism System (ARTS) was developed on a smartphone-based platform for a novel application scenario using 3D scans converted from a point cloud to a portable interaction size. ARTS comprises a real-time environment viewing module, a space-switching module, and an Augmente… Show more

“…text, photos, cartoons, computer animations and videos) on top of a real-world environment (Jung et al , 2015). AR is particularly relevant to tourism because computer-generated images can be superimposed to introduce sites and events (Shih et al , 2019). AR applications allow tourists to create a strong feeling of presence and achieve an unforgettable tourism experience (Jung et al , 2015).…”

“…A mobile navigation app that supports the activities of users during both normal times and disasters was developed by integrating augmented reality and web geographic information systems using landmark icons and pictograms as AR markers [21]. Additionally, a mobile app called Augmented Reality Tourism System (ARTS) uses 3D scans converted from a point cloud to a portable interaction size to display interactions between cultural heritage, tourism, and pedagogy [22]. In addition, a marker-free system was also proposed for AR-based indoor navigation.…”

“…They use a process called simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) to localize the device in real-world coordinates. In the literature, several AR applications, which are based on these libraries, have been proposed for different use cases [ 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 ]. Nevertheless, there are no studies that address the estimation of tracking accuracy of different mobile devices while considering AR libraries and price ranges at the same time.…”
