Abstract: O Mercado de Madureira (Rio de Janeiro/RJ) é um grande mercado popular voltado para venda de artigos diversos, predominando o comércio de produtos religiosos e esotéricos. Este trabalho objetiva levantar as espécies vegetais mais comercializadas e suas origens, apontando as possíveis razões de introdução no Brasil e associando as prováveis origens dessas plantas aos usos atuais. Arjona et al (2007) found that the two principal centers of distribution of plants used for medicinal and religious purposes (i.e., non-industrial) in the metropolitan area were both in the periphery: one in Iaraja ´(just south of the municipality of São João de Meriti), and the other in the suburban neighborhood of Madureira. Moreover, practitioners of Afro-Brazilian religions, given both their concentration in peripheral parts of the metropolitan area, as well as the centrality of plants, water, and nature in general to the religion, are key players in the circulation of medicinal plants in Baixada Fluminense, as well as the peripheral areas of the city of Rio de Janeiro.…”
