Aspirin-triggered resolvin D1 reduces pneumococcal lung infection and inflammation in a viral and bacterial coinfection pneumonia model

Abstract: Formyl peptide receptor 2/lipoxin A 4 (LXA 4 ) receptor (Fpr2/ALX) co-ordinates the transition from inflammation to resolution during acute infection by binding to distinct ligands including serum amyloid A (SAA) and Resolvin D1 (RvD1). Here, we evaluated the proresolving actions of aspirin-triggered RvD1 (AT-RvD1) in an acute coinfection pneumonia model. Coinfection with Streptococcus pneumoniae and influenza A virus (IAV) markedly increased pneumococcal lung load and neutrophilic inflammation during the reso… Show more

“…[ 85 ] Therapeutic treatment with exogenous AT-RvD1 could significantly reduce the pneumococcal load during the acute phase of infection (days 4–6 postpneumococcal inoculation). [ 86 ] AT-RvD1 could also significantly reduce the neutrophil elastase activity and restore total antimicrobial activity, reduce the number of infiltrating lung neutrophils and monocytes/macrophages, and limit the movement of excessive leukocyte chemotaxis from the infected bronchioles to distal areas of the lungs through binding ALX. [ 86 ]…”

“…Proresolving mediators, in contrast to anti-inflammatory molecules, reduce inflammation without compromising the host defenses against pathogens. [10][11][12][13] Annexin A1 (AnxA1) is a protein shown to induce several features of the resolution of inflammation such as regulation of neutrophil transmigration, promotion of neutrophil apoptosis and efferocytosis, recruitment of monocytes, and induction of tissue repair. [14][15][16] The role of AnxA1 has been extensively studied in inflammatory diseases, including pleurisy, 14 peritonitis, 17 acute lung injury, 18 and others.…”

“…To date, AT-LXs, AT-Rvs of the D series, and AT-PDs have been identified ( ClĂ ria and Serhan, 1995 ; Chiang and Serhan, 2004 ; Serhan et al, 2004 ). They exert similar pro-resolving properties ( Eickmeier et al, 2013 ; Wang et al, 2017 ; Liu et al, 2018 ; Hu et al, 2019 ).…”
