Abstract:The increasing world population and expected climate scenarios impel the agricultural sector towards a more efficient use of water. The scientific community is responding to that challenge by developing a variety of methods and technologies to increase crop water productivity. Precision irrigation is intended to achieve that purpose, through the wise choice of the irrigation system, the irrigation strategy, the method to schedule irrigation, and the production target. In this review, the relevance of precision irrigation for a rational use of water in agriculture, and methods related to the use of plant-based measurements for both the assessment of plant water stress and irrigation scheduling, are considered. These include non-automated, conventional methods based on manual records of plant water status and gas exchange, and automated methods where the related variable is recorded continuously and automatically. Thus, the use of methodologies based on the Scholander chamber and portable gas analysers, as well as those of systems for measuring sap flow, stem diameter variation and leaf turgor pressure, are reviewed. Other methods less used but with a potential to improve irrigation are also considered. These include those based on measurements related to the stem and leaf water content, and to changes in electrical potential within the plant. The use of measurements related to canopy temperature, both for direct assessment of water stress and for defining zones with different irrigation requirements, is also addressed. Finally, the importance of choosing the production target wisely, and the need for economic analyses to obtain maximum benefit of the technology related to precision irrigation, are outlined.

Why table olive is still not popular with Chinese consumers after its introduction to China for more than 50 years? As scientific output can reflect the applications of their study objects, to showcase the situation of Chinese table olive studies and to find out the possible answers to this question, we performed statistical analyses based on the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-E) database and the China Academic Journals Full-text Database (CJFD). Results show that the R & D of China's table olive sector are mainly focused on the introduction and cultivation of olives trees (Olea europaea L.) as well as the extraction of their high-value pharmaceutical and organic components, but rarely involve specific processing issues. However, the Chinese papers mostly report the results of table olive processing as well as the industrialization and the products with Chinese characteristics though the studies on these types of products have not been carried out in a comprehensive and systematic way. Chinese table olive researchers should consolidate the exchange and study with the non-Mediterranean countries, whose scientific output on table olives are worth of reference, such as Denmark, the UK, and the US, while maintaining communications with the scientists in Mediterranean countries.

Water availability is projected to decrease in Mediterranean Central Chile, necessitating sustainable production strategies based on improved irrigation management. This study focuses on estimating water use efficiency (WUE) in raspberry crops at two validation sites using remote sensing and soil irrigation data. By employing the crop water stress index (CWSI), we demonstrate the potential of this tool in enhancing irrigation management and establishing sustainable production practices. The results demonstrate the successful estimation of actual evapotranspiration (ETa) using the Operational Simplified Surface Energy Balance (SSEBop) model (coefficient of determination [R2] = 0.92; root mean square error [RMSE] = 0.97 mm day−1), while the CWSI indicated high stress levels after 5 days of irrigation. Moreover, validation at two sites reveals significant differences in applied irrigation, with sites A and B receiving 17,097 and 3760 m3 ha−1, respectively, while the average water demand is close to 5300 m3 ha−1. These variations result in discrepancies in WUE, with values of 0.79 and 3.64 kg m−3. By integrating remote sensing indices and soil data, this study proposes that maintaining an 85% ETa rate during noncritical periods can enhance WUE. This work demonstrates the potential use of a water stress index to monitor crops in the Chilean central zone for efficient water resource use under future scarcity scenarios.
