Assessing and mapping cultural ecosystem services at community level in the Colombian Amazon

Abstract: Understanding the significance that cultural ecosystem services (CES) have for traditional communities will provide useful input to the design of more appropriate regional or territorial plans for the area in which they are located. We conducted semi-structured surveys in 11 indigenous communities within the corregimiento La Pedrera, of the Colombian Amazon. We analysed the CES established in the region through a study of their preferences in relation to the service providing units (SPUs) identified, using the… Show more

“…These results are like those reported by Lara-Pulido, Guevara-Sanginés, and Arias-Martelo (2018) for Mexico. Although opportunities for recreation and tourism was the most common ES studied in Colombia, other cultural ESs are little considered in the Colombian literature, thus, pointing to a relevant research gap for a multiethnic and multicultural country (Angarita-Baéz et al 2017;Ruiz-Agudelo et al 2020) where the tourist potential is important, but ethnic diversity indicates a variety of values relevant for the Colombian territorieś sustainable management.…”

“…The coupling of the nonindigenous researchers and stakeholders' knowledge with that of the indigenous communities may inform sustainable management practices that are respectful of indigenous perspectives and intellectual property rights. Nevertheless, there are ontological, epistemological, political, and financial obstacles and limitations that must be addressed in transdisciplinary research projects that link the academic, technical, and indigenous knowledge systems for environmental and economic management (Athayde et al 2016, Angarita-Baéz et al 2017. Both in the indigenous and scientific perspectives, diversity is a key aspect to maintain exotic and native species in balance, thus avoiding major competition and their extinction.…”

“…It's important to notice, that some practical site-specific CES assessment studies choose to examine those ecosystem services that are most characteristic for the study area, without seeking to account for absolutely all aspects of ecosystem services [31][32][33][34][35][36][37].…”
