Assessing Attachment in Psychotherapy: Validation of the Patient Attachment Coding System (PACS)

Abstract: The Patient Attachment Coding System is a valid measure of attachment that can classify clients' attachment based on any single psychotherapy transcript, in many therapeutic modalities Client differences in attachment manifest in part independently of the therapist's contributions Client adult attachment patterns are likely to affect psychotherapeutic processes.

“…Specifically models that describe micro-processes and use empirically sound and manualized content analysis procedures are promising candidates. Examples of those are ruptures and repairs (Safran et al, 2011 ), innovative moments (Goncalves et al, 2011 ), or the patient attachment coding system (Talia et al, 2017 ).…”

“…In order to advance the study of mentalizing in psychotherapy, in this paper we test two new assessment methods: an in-session RF coding system based on the RF scale developed for the AAI (In-session RF, Talia, Steele, & Taubner, 2015), and the Exploring scale from the Patient Attachment Coding System (PACS, . The PACS is a measure of attachment security based on session transcripts that has recently been validated with the AAI (Slade, 2016;Talia, Miller-Bottome, & Daniel, 2017). The PACS Exploring scale measures a particular component of in-session security: the capacity to communicate about mental states while remaining open to the therapist's feedback.…”

“…Consideramos entonces la inevitabilidad del apego en cualquier relación terapéutica (independientemente del modelo teórico que la sostiene). Esta conclusión lógica desde la teoría, ha encontrado respaldo empírico, por ejemplo con la Patient Attachment Coding System (PACS), un instrumento de evaluación que permite evaluar el despliegue de la relación de apego hacia el terapeuta dentro de la sesión, con independencia del tipo específico de psicoterapia (Talia, Miller-Bottome & Daniel, 2017).…”
