“…δ 13 C DOC samples were filtered with GF/F (0.7 µm) filter, and then stored in pre-cleaned 40 mL bottles until analyses. Measurements for δ 13 C DOC were made using a total organic carbon (TOC) analyzer (Aurora 1030W, OI Analytical) coupled to a cavity ring-down spectroscopy system (CRDS; G1111-i, Picarro) following the approach of Ya et al (2015). DIC was removed by adding H 3 PO 4 and sparging with N 2 .…”

“…However, the interpretation of the isotopic ratio from a bulk sample in complex coastal environments is somewhat complicated by the overlap of isotopic ranges. Thus, several studies have used δ 13 C-DOC combined with FDOM (Osburn and Stedmon, 2011;Ya et al, 2015;and Lu et al, 2015) or carbon isotope ratios combined with the C/N ratio (Thornton and McManus, 1994;Andrews et al, 1998;Wang et al, 2004;McCallister et al, 2006;and Pradhan et al, 2014) to discriminate different sources of DOM in estuarine and coastal waters. As far as we know, these three tracers have not yet been used together to determine DOM sources in coastal waters.…”

“…Photochemical reactivity proxies established for Everglades DOM (Chen et al, 2010) were found to be equally applicable to the Okavango Delta DOM pool (Cawley et al 2012b). In addition, we applied the EEM-PARAFAC approach in combination with stable C isotopes to both Florida Bay Ya et al 2015) and Shark Bay (Cawley et al 2012a) to assess the contribution of living and senescent seagrass to the DOM pool. While seagrass communities were found to be significant contributors to the DOC pool based on C release through exudation during primary productivity, these studies determined that release of DOC through leaching from senescent seagrass also contributes to the DOC pool.…”
