Assessing Interdependencies Between Food and Energy Prices: The Case of Biodiesel in Germany

Abstract: The paper aims to analyse the relationship between energy prices (biodiesel, crude oil) and food commodities -vegetable oils used also as feedstock for biodiesel production. The econometric technique of price transmission, such as unit root test, cointegration test and vector error correction model, is applied to assess the interdependencies between energy prices and vegetable oil prices in Germany. Results suggest close price linkages between prices of vegetable oils and biodiesel and confirm that the vegetab… Show more

“…For China, Deng et al [76] calculated the cost efficiency of Jatropha curcas biodiesel with positive results albeit with a smaller discount rate. Use of biofuels was also discussed for Germany and the United States [77][78][79]. The results show that net present value is mostly positive for discount rates ranging from 1 to 11%.…”

“…VECM can be considered as an extension of the VAR model, allowing the distinction between short-run and long-run dynamics [9]. The VECM approach has also been recently used by many authors in the agri-food sector [3,4,9,10,15,16,28,29]. The effects of the disease crisis on price developments were investigated by Lloyd et al [30], who found by VECM that the Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) crisis had a much higher impact on changes in agricultural prices than on retail prices.…”

“…The first attempts focused on the direct use of scarce resources in the form of corn, wheat, rye, or silage (Rabeya et al, 2020, Makutenas et al, 2018, Barrière et al, 2016. The use of the mentioned sources has obvious disadvantages which were already well documented in the available literature (Lajdová et al, 2017). The overall energy gain from these biofuels has been doubted in the research when compared to second-and thirdgeneration biofuels (Lorenz and Morris, 1995;Pimentel and Patzek, 2005).…”
