Assessing Maternal Competence and Sensitivity to Premature Infants' Cues

Abstract: Because it is becoming increasingly evident that the sensitivity of mothers to their premature infants can affect the mother-infant relationship, means to assess maternal sensitivity to infants are essential. The Boston City Hospital Assessment of Parental Sensitivity (BCHAPS) was the tool used in this study to assess maternal competence and sensitivity to premature infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The concurrent validity of the tool was determined by examining the relation between scores on… Show more

“…Before discharge neonatal care nurses rated maternal sensitivity of mothers of preterm infants based on their observations in the last week on the Boston City Hospital Assessment of Parental Sensitivity (BCHAPS [17]). For full-term infants, midwives completed the BCHAPS during home visits in the first 10 days of infant's life.…”

“…For mothers with neonatal intensive care unit experiences, there was no correlation between maternal sensitivity and infant characteristics (e.g. weight, gestational age, APGAR score and severity of illness) (Zahr & Cole 1991). However, the study exploring relationship between maternal sensitivity and infant characteristics is rare (Zahr & Cole 1991).…”
