Assessing personality at risk in personnel selection and development

Abstract: This paper demonstrates the validity and usefulness of a count technique to screen for potential personality dysfunctioning in NEO‐PI‐R ratings obtained in selection and professional development assessments. The usefulness of this screening technique for Industrial, Work and Organizational (IWO) psychologists is demonstrated in five different samples that were administered the NEO‐PI‐R for selection or development purposes. Three additional samples served as normative data to compute FFM PD count cut‐offs that… Show more

“…Third, trait neuroticism was a predictor of adult migraine, after taking account the effects of socio-demographic, biomedical, and intelligence factors on adult migraine. As neuroticism is significantly associated with symptoms of anxiety and depression (Cheng & Furnham, 2003;Furnham, 2008), treatment for migraine might be more effective when interventions such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) (Beck, 1979), one of the most effective interventions for depression, are used together with medical treatment (Chan, Cardoso, & Chronister, 2009 shown that Neuroticism is the most powerful Big-Five personality predictor of mental wellbeing (Furnham & Cheng, 1999), physical health (Sutin, Terracciano, Deiana, Naitza, Ferrucci, Uda, Schlessinger, & Costa, 2010), and work success (de Fruyt et al, 2009). People with high scores on Neuroticism scales are prone to anxiety, depression and hypochondriasis which affects all aspects of their educational, social and work lives.…”

“…Content information is understandable for communicating results at personal or expert level, avoiding possible diagnostic label stigmatization and legal complications sometimes associated to the application of psychopathological questionnaires. Its utility is proven in clinical and organizational fields, facilitating the psychological diagnosis process (Miller et al, 2010;Widiger & Presnall, 2013) and counterproductive behavior identification or competency assessment in the workplace (De Fruyt et al, 2009;Wille, De Fruyt, & De Clercq, 2013). This approach also helps to overcome some categorical model difficulties, such as PD comorbidity (Clark, 2007;Trull & Durrett, 2005;Widiger & Samuel, 2005).…”

“…The utility of these FFM PD counts has been further supported in the meantime for both clinical and professional developmental diagnostic purposes. Miller and colleagues (2010) demonstrated the utility of this system for clinical decision making, whereas Wille et al (2013) and De Fruyt et al (2009, 2013b investigated the applicability of the counts to screen for aberrant traits observable in the working population to identify dark side personality tendencies that may hinder performance or functioning at work.…”
