Assessing Psychological Resilience: Development and Psychometric Properties of the English and Dutch Version of the Resilience Evaluation Scale (RES)

Abstract: Background: Psychological resilience is a distinct factor that affects mental health outcomes after adversities. This study describes the development, validity and measurement invariance (MI) of a Dutch and English scale on psychological resilience, called the Resilience Evaluation Scale (RES).Methods: Separate online surveys with the Dutch and English version of the RES and hypothesized related measures were distributed in a Dutch- and English-speaking group, both drawn from the general population. Results: Ex… Show more

“…This becomes particularly problematic when considering interpreting the results of prior RCTs (see for example Chmitorz et al, 2018 ). In order to disseminate and implement novel interventions, methodologically robust definitions and measurement strategies must be in place with thorough cross-cultural validation (see for example, van der Meer et al, 2018 ). This is a critical next step to informing targeted treatment and resilience supporting strategies.…”

“…Moreover, symptoms frequently co-occur, especially after interpersonal trauma (e.g. Baekkelund, Frewen, Lanius, Ottesen Berg, & Arnevik, 2018;Cramer, Waldorp, van der Maas, & Borsboom, 2010;Kessler et al, 2017;McLaughlin et al, 2015;Olff et al, 2019;van der Kolk, Ford, & Spinazzola, 2019).…”

“…Following Sousa and Rojjanasrirat (2011), translations required at least one translation into the target language by one translator and one back-translation into English by a second independent translator who was blind to the original material. The back-translation had to be checked with the primary author of the GPS.…”

“…Assessing resilience thus becomes a challenge. Despite the development of many psychometric measures to evaluate psychological resilience, its validity is still uncertain [13][14][15]. These measures have some missing information regarding the psychometric properties of resilience, suggesting a more rigorous theoretical basis to justify the results is warranted.…”
