Assessing Soil Nutrients Variability and Adequacy for the Cultivation of Maize, Cassava, and Sorghum in Selected Agroecological Zones of Cameroon

Abstract: Access to information on soil nutrients status and variability is essential in understanding the potential of soils and their responsiveness to management interventions in agriculture. The current study evaluated soil nutrients status in selected agroecological zones (AEZs) of Cameroon and identified variations and their adequacy for maize (Zea mays L.), sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. (Moench)), and cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) production. A total of 163 soil samples were collected from surface (0–15 cm) la… Show more

“…Poor soil fertility is a major constraint for crop production in Cameroon with nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) as the main limiting elements ( Tening et al, 2013 ; Ngosong et al, 2019 ; Nanganoa et al, 2020 ). Soil nutrient deficiencies are commonly resolved using chemical NPK fertilizers that are deleterious to the environment and humans when applied in excess, which has necessitated alternative management practices that can foster crop productivity without jeopardizing sustainability ( Ntambo et al, 2017 ; Mahmud et al, 2020 ; Mndzebele et al, 2020 ).…”

“…Small-scale heterogeneity of soil nutrient distribution It may be more affected by structural and random factors (such as chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and plant growth hormones, etc .). In addition, the fertilizer use efficiency of different plants is different, resulting in large spatial differences in the nutrients remaining in the soil ( Nanganoa et al, 2020 ).…”

“…The soil in the area is mostly ferruginous type developed on old basalt and has a brown reddish clay texture. There is an immense dependence of agriculture productivity on soil physicochemical properties (Nanganoa et al, 2020).…”
