Assessing stream water quality influenced by storm overflows from sewers

Abstract: For open channels significant pollution sources during the intensive precipitations are outflows from storm-water overflows on the sewer network. When combined with low discharges in rivers, the water released from overflows can cause high concentration of pollution in receiving open channels. In this paper, the results of computer modeling of the impact of storm-water overflows on the stream water quality in three municipalities in Czech Republic are shown. The local river networks are the main receivers in t… Show more

“…As the accuracy of groundwater simulation depends on the quality and quantity of input data [5], it was necessary to obtain different input data to develop the conceptual model. Analysis of the current situation, calibration of the model and prediction of the development of groundwater after implementation of the planned structure highly depends on the quality of the input data [6], [7].…”

“…The non-point source emissions that end up in surface waters have many different pathways: overland flow, groundwater flow, tile drainage, erosion, urban systems and atmospheric deposition, etc. Surface streams are polluted during more intensive rainfall mainly and in snowmelt period, thus during significant runoff events (Julínek and Říha, 2017;Halmová et al, 2019). The heightened amount of nitro-gen in surface streams can result environmental issues such as eutrophication of waters, growth of periphyton, etc.…”

“…The functionality of sewer networks can be verified by monitoring them as well as by modeling the unfavorable situations that may occur during their existence at mathematical level. This option is provided by existing software solutions that allow performing sewer network hydraulic assessments [1]. In sewage networks, the literature itself assigns almost double the increase of the pipeline capacity flows and thus assures sufficient flow capacity of the sewerage network even in the prospective state.…”
