Assessing the Bioactivity and Antioxidative Properties of Some Compounds Isolated From Abutilon Hirtum (Lam.)

Abstract: Objectives: The present study on the methanol extract of Abutilon hirtum (Lam.) [Malvaceae] afforded ten compounds. Findings from this assessment indicated that A. hirtum leaves possessed vast potential as medicinal product especially in liver cancer treatment. Methods: Dried-powdered leaves were boiled under reflux in 10 L of petroleum ether for 8 hrs. After filtration, the solvent was evaporated; afforded 15 g of petroleum ether extract followed by boiling with reflux for 8 hrs with chloroform, then filtrati… Show more

“…Additionally, the comparison between the IC50 of LEAH and standard ascorbic acid shows that the lower the IC50 values are, the lower the potential source of anticytotoxic agents. Many complementary and alternative medicines, such as A. hirtum , were found to contain polyphenols, terpenoids, and flavonoids, according to the results of previous studies (e.g., gallic acid, geraniol caryophyllene, and β-sitosterol), and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which has activity in fighting cytotoxic cells in the liver and is useful as a chemotherapy [ 22 ]. The latter compound also has antioxidant activity [ 23 , 24 ].…”

“…β‐sitosterol extracted from Jacaranda oxyphylla exhibited strong antimicrobial effects against Bacillus cereus , S. aureus , E. coli , Salmonella typhimurium , and Candida albicans (Pereira et al, 2016). Some of these microbes have also been used by Hamed et al (2017) to evaluate the bioactivity of β‐sitosterol purified from methanol extract of Abutilon hirtum . Nyila et al (2012) prepared ethyl acetate extract of Acacia karroo and isolated β‐sitosterol as pure compound.…”
