Assessing the level of vulerability due to climate change in extremely poor coastal communes in Quang Binh, Quang Tri, and Thua Thien Hue provinces, Vietnam

Abstract: Climate change has been severely affected the lives of people in coastal areas of Vietnam, particularly in the poor communes in the Central region, namely Quang Binh, Quang Tri, and Thua Thien Hue. This report focuses on analyzing and assessing the vulnerability caused by climate change in the extremely poor communes in Quang Binh, Quang Tri, and Thua Thien Hue province, including five levels: Very low, low, medium, high, very high. Through the IPCC vulnerability assessment method, which includes three compone… Show more

“…The sources of data to develop this article include: (1) The land map of the Thua Thien Hue province, a scale of 1/100,000, provided by the Institute of Agricultural Planning and Design [13][14][15]. This is one of the bases for the authors to conduct field surveys to collect typical soil profiles representing ten soil groups and land use types.…”

“…The North central coastal region of Vietnam stretches approximately 700 km of coastline, characterized by a relatively high population density with a poverty rate greater than 10% in 2020 [22]. It is among the most climate-vulnerable regions of Vietnam [23,24].…”

“…The central coastal communities are thus grouped into different household groups: fishing-based households, agricultural-based households, and aquacultural-based households. However, due to the land characteristics of white-sand dunes with poor fertility, the communities have been increasingly more reliant on aquaculture and fisheries for livelihoods [22,25], although this level of aquaculture and fisheries reliance depends on households' livelihood sources and capacity [22].…”

“…Even though 2 jetties at the north and south banks of the estuary are built up since 2015, the sediment process at the channel of the estuary has been still happening. The deposition of sediment directly affects flood drainage and waterway navigation as well as causing disturbance in socio-economic development [2].…”

“…The coastal area is significantly influenced by the seasonal monsoon regime with large northeast waves from October to March and calm southeast waves from April to September each year. As a result, the morphology of the entrance to Thuan An estuary undergoes dynamic seasonal changes due to the distinct variations in the direction of wave-induced longshore sediment transport between the two monsoon seasons [2].…”
