Assessment Method to Identify the Potential of Rooftop PV Systems in the Residential Districts

Abstract: The installation of rooftop PV systems in residential buildings and dwellings has increased rapidly in the past decade, and these systems have become a major source of renewable energy in many countries. This paper presents a new method of estimating the potential of rooftop PV systems to meet energy demands in residential districts by introducing a roof suitability factor. The method of assessment is based on an online tool called SunSPot, which uses a solar radiation heat map layer of building roofs and the … Show more

“…Still, the difference between 25 • and 30 • is practically negligible in peninsular cases. This behavior is perfectly described by means of a second-degree polynomial equation with a maximum of around 30º, as can be seen in Equations (11)(12)(13)(14). In Lanzarote (Canary Islands), which is in a considerably more southern location, the variation in production with inclination is very small, and only gains are achieved compared to 10 • of less than 3%.…”

“…Since the building sector has emerged as a significant energy consumer, governments worldwide have introduced various policies. The utilization of solar energy conversion systems is at the forefront of attention [11]. PV self-consumption systems at the residential or small business level can be designed to reduce electricity consumption from the conventional local grid and achieve competitiveness with grid electricity prices.…”

“…The SunSPoT tool provides a 2.5 dimension PV rooftop assessment capability that is user intuitive at both an urban and building level scale. The tool was found to have a similar calculation output when compared against detailed PVSYST solar simulation software (Odeh and Nguyen, 2021). Its functionality extends beyond PV potential outputs and compliments a suite of Australian PV mapping and tracking tools (https://pv-map.apvi.…”
