Assessment of right atrial function with speckle tracking echocardiography after percutaneous closure of an atrial septal defect

Abstract: After percutaneous transcatheter closure of a secundum ASD, there was an increase in RA longitudinal strain. 2D-STE strain analysis appears to be helpful for the assessment of RA function and of response to correction of volume overload after percutaneous transcatheter closure of a secundum ASD.

“…When compared to the previous studies, some authors showed significantly different results of a significant reduction in RV volumes at the first month after ASD closure and significantly improved RV function measured with speckle tracking and RV MPI indicated long‐term volume overload was associated with decreased strain values and RV function . Thus, these authors concluded that long‐term volume overload can deteriorate RV function in adult patients.…”

“…Research on the function of the heart chambers in patients with ASDs in comparison with healthy control individuals has shown impairment in the former group . The recovery of function in the cardiac chambers after these treatment modalities is assessed with echocardiography . The functions of the right atrium (RA) and the left atrium (LA) after ASD closure have been previously investigated, but most of these studies had maximal follow‐up durations of only 1 year .…”

“…RA function is a useful index for evaluating RV diastolic function in pulmonary arterial hypertension [25,26] and has been reported to have a signi cant negative correlation with pulmonary artery systolic pressure and pulmonary vascular resistance, indicating that the RA strain is directly related to the severity of PH [27,28]. After an ASD is corrected using open-heart surgery, decreased RA strain is also associated with decreased RV diastolic stiffness [29]. Right atrial reservoir function decreases over time from mild RV maladaptation to severe RV maladaptation in PH [30] and is associated with RAP and mPAP in PH patients [31][32][33].…”
