Assessment of thyroid function in pesticide formulators

Abstract: Thirty male pesticide formulators exposed to the dust and liquid formulation of endosulfan, quinalphos, chlorpyriphos, monocrotophos, lindane, parathion, phorate, and fenvalerate and 20 comparable control subjects from the same area of study were examined for the evaluation of thyroid function tests. The level of TSH was elevated (about 28%) in pesticide formulators as compared to a control group, but the increase was statistically insignificant. Based on the individual TSH measurement, 3 of 30 formul… Show more

“…T 3 level was normal in all spray painters and ranged from 0.65-1.30 ng/ml (normal range 0.80-2.0 ng/ml). An elevation in the level of thyroid hormones (TSH) have also been reported by us earlier in pesticides formulators 12) and welders 13) and these studies substantiate our present findings on the pattern of thyroid levels in spray painters.…”

“…Total T 3 was suppressed significantly in formulators while a marginal decrease (7%) was noticed in T 4 level. TSH levels were also elevated by 28% but the rise was statistically insignificant (Zaidi et al, 2000). These formulators had significantly low serum cholinesterase activity and high serum BHC content indicating appreciable exposure to their working environment.…”

“…Farmers who had aerial application of fungicides to their land showed a significant shift in TSH values; subclinical hypothyroidism was noted in rural applicators (TSH values >4.5 mU/L), but not in urban control subjects. The level of TSH was elevated also in male pesticide formulators exposed to the dust and liquid formulation of endosulfan, quinalphos, chlorpyriphos, monocrotophos, lindane, parathion, phorate, and fenvalerate as compared to a control group, but the increase was statistically insignificant (Zaidi et al, 2000).…”
