Assessment of trace element contamination of urban surface soil at informal industrial sites in a low-income country

Abstract: Trace elements released by human activity are ubiquitously detected in surface soil. The trace element contamination statuses of 20 sampling stations at two busy informal industrial sites of Harare city, Zimbabwe, were evaluated using geochemical indices. Spectrophotometric determinations of concentrations of trace elements in surface soil indicated generally higher values than the reference site and the average upper earth's crust. High contamination factors were observed for trace elements across sampling st… Show more

“…Bawtry Gasworks was already developed as a housing estate when the contamination was detected and remediation took place, while in Tubize, the developer cleared the site to build a large housing complex [32,41,42]. Today, sites that are situated in or near densely populated areas with high land value, and which pose unacceptable human health risks, are, in high-income countries, typically quickly dealt with and are funded swiftly by the liable party [43][44][45]. In fact, almost every land development in inner city areas is expected to deal with contamination due to its previous use or surrounding activities, including heavy traffic.…”

“…Heavy metal pollution emanating from urban areas is a major environmental problem in Zimbabwe (Teta, Ncube, & Naik, 2017). Informal industrial sites and waste dump areas around the capital and largest city, Harare, have been implicated in high levels of environmental contamination by cadmium, copper, chromium, and lead (Kanda, Ncube, Hwende, & Makumbe, 2018;Tongesayi, Kugara, & Tongesayi, 2018). One study estimated that adults and children who scavenge at dump sites around Harare are exposed to lead levels that exceed WHO tolerable daily intake levels due to inhalation of contaminated airborne dust (Tongesayi et al, 2018).…”

“…In recent decades, significant attention has been paid to heavy metal contamination as a dangerous environmental problem because of the toxicity, abundance, persistence and bioaccumulation of these elements (Chen et al, 2016,) (Islam et al, 2017 and ) (Jin et al, 2019). In general, the contamination state of the environment is evaluated by the total concentration of heavy metals (Kanda et al, 2018). The riverine sediments are considered as the main basins for various pollutants following the largely uncontrolled discharge of contamination resulting from human activities and geogenic processes (Liu et al, 2018).…”
