Assigning value to energy storage systems at multiple points in an electrical grid

Abstract: This article presents a taxonomy for assigning benefits to the services provided by energy storage systems (ESSs), defines approaches for monetizing the value associated with these services, assigns values to major ESS applications by region based on a review of an extensive set of literature, and summarizes and evaluates the capabilities of several tools currently used to estimate value for specific ESS deployments.

“…In addition, energy storage systems are essential components for integrating renewable energy resources [12]. Other applications for energy storage systems include micro-grids and electrification of remote areas, in which energy storage systems are used to minimize dependence on the main grid supply [13,14].…”

“…In this paper, the distribution network and energy storage components are the major components of the simulation. Other elements such as the power electronics devices used as an interface between the energy storage and the network can be easily introduced in the model as a simple efficiency factor [11,14,28].…”

“…for wind-heavy mixes in areas with extensive transmission). Rather, storage is a facilitative condition for higher wind and solar penetration and ultimately may provide value to the system through a range of services aside from variable renewable integration (Electric Power Research Institute 2017b, Balducci et al 2018, He et al 2018, Arbabzadeh et al 2019. Nevertheless, it is important to note that, given the assumptions in this analysis, battery storage is deployed in all scenarios with wind shares higher than 50% and solar shares above 20%.…”

“…2 shows, from 2010 to 2017, the amount of utilityscale storage in the USA derived from resources other than pumped hydro and compressed air increased from 50 MW to more than 1100 MW. 2 The costs of a lithium-ion battery pack declined from about $1000 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) to about $200 per kWh in the same period. Over that same period, state policy activity on energy storage also accelerated and is likely to have a significant impact on future investment levels.…”
