Assimilating total building performance mandates with Chinese geomancy principles and scenarios

Abstract: PurposeThe ancient principles of Chinese geomancy appear to share the same goal as total building performance (TBP) in delivering an optimal environment for occupants that promotes their well‐being. This research aims to evaluate the relevance and applicability of Chinese geomancy principles and scenarios with respect to the six TBP mandates.Design/methodology/approachThe Chinese geomancy concepts vary from considerations relating to openings and colours to surrounding amenities and building height. The assimi… Show more

“…On the other hand, traditional art of feng shui proves to be a well-structured apparatus that demonstrates how a specific spiritual concept can be used in the design of the supportive environment. Although there are only few scientific evaluations concentrating on design process [33,34] some research show, that following feng shui recommendations can actually help design a more efficient living environment [35,36,37]. Other comparative studies show, that some recommendations of feng shui and environmental psychology partly overlap [5,38].…”

“…In addition, most previous researchers have developed framework proposals for improving the quality of the environment without assessing the need for rating tool assessment as an alternative approach (Khalil et al, 2016;Che-ani et al, 2019;Nazirah et al, 2011). Moreover, studies from other countries, such as the UK, USA, China, Singapore and Taiwan state that the current building performance assessment indicates on satisfaction levels for building quality and does not focus on classifying the condition of spaces in the building, for example, if there are any defects (Nobe and Greenwell, 2016;Pheng et al, 2012;Lee and Hensen, 2015). Furthermore, grounded information through research and investigations involving specific spaces on school buildings is very limited.…”
