The assimilation model of therapeutic change describes the self as comprised of multiple internal voices (mental states), and tracks the development of understanding and joint action between those voices in successful psychotherapies. This model has been constructed from studies of individual therapy, and has generally focused on intrapersonal change. The emotion-focused, couple therapy case presented here involving Sarah and Mark was studied using an iterative, team-based approach to theory-building case-study research to (1) assess whether the process of resolving interpersonal problems in couple therapy is isomorphic to the process of assimilation in individual therapy and, if possible, and to (2) extend the model's ability to describe the process of resolving interpersonal problems. Observations supported the hypothesis that intra-and interpersonal problems resolve in ways that are isomorphic to one another: The patterns of perception, emotion, communication, and action observed during the process of resolving interpersonal problems were consistent with those observed in intrapersonal problem resolution in previous assimilation model research. As the couple developed mutual understandings and increasingly engaged in cooperative action, previously excluded aspects of one another's experience came to be increasingly included (i.e., valued and influential) in each partners' meaning-and decision-making. This parallels the increasing inclusion of previously avoided experience observed in successful individual treatments. Case observations are presented, and clinical and research implications are discussed.

Resumen: El modelo de asimilación describe el cambio terapéutico a través de la APES (Escala de Asimilación de Experiencias Problemáticas) intentando reconciliar el estudio del cambio a través de la comparación pre-test/post-test con el estudio del cambio momento-a-momento. Se describen y se comparan los procesos de asimilación de dos casos clínicos tratados con la terapia lingüística de evaluación. Se codificó una muestra de 2.211 párrafos con la APES. El caso de éxito manifestó, a lo largo y al final del tratamiento, niveles elevados de asimilación en sus cuatro experiencias problemáticas. El caso de escaso éxito presentó, en diversos momentos y al final del tratamiento, la asimilación de algunas de sus cinco experiencias problemáticas. En ambos casos el patrón de asimilación fue dentado, con saltos entre niveles de la escala APES.Palabras clave: Modelo de asimilación; APES; cambio terapéutico; terapia lingüística de evaluación. Two processes of assimilation are described and compared from two clinical cases treated with the linguistic therapy of evaluation. A sample of 2,211 passages was coded with the APES. The good outcome case showed, at the end of treatment and at different moments of the therapeutic process, high stages of assimilation in its four problematic experiences. The poor outcome case showed, at the end of treatment and at different moments of the therapeutic process, the assimilation of some of its five problematic experiences. In both cases, the assimilation pattern was sawtoothed, with jumps and returns between APES stages.

Resumen: En este trabajo se busca describir el proceso de asimilación a través de narraciones de una participante, Mónica, que tenía problemas de tipo oncológico y el beneficio de emplear narraciones para dicha asimilación. Mónica escribió 31 narraciones, durante 8 meses, sobre su experiencia con diversos fibroadenomas y tumores benignos. Estas narraciones se analizaron mediante el modelo de asimilación y la Escala de Asimilación de Experiencias Problemáticas o APES. El procedimiento de preparar los datos para el análisis con la APES dio como resultado 373 párrafos que fueron codificados con la APES y en relación a ocho temas distintivos y sus correspondientes voces dominantes y no dominantes, relacionados con sus experiencias problemáticas. Los resultados muestran que Mónica alcanzó niveles elevados de asimilación en siete de sus ocho experiencias problemáticas. A pesar de esta asimilación, los datos muestran notables retrocesos, es decir, saltos entre distintos niveles APES. Abstract: In this study we aim to describe the assimilation process through our participant narratives, Mónica, who had oncological problems and to explore the advantages of the use of narratives for assimilating these experiences. El modelo de asimilación es de tipo procesual y permite explorar y describir el cambio terapéuti-co, entendido éste como asimilación de experiencias problemáticas.
