Associated Multiple Congenital Malformations in Domestic Animals. Contribution of Four Cases

Abstract: Summary The incidence and significance of the appearance of various associated congenital malformations in a single individual have received poor attention in veterinary medicine. In this article, the malformations exhibited by four animals pertaining to three different animal species are described, and the possible reasons for the association of these anomalies are discussed from the viewpoint of the comparative medicine. All four animals showed two or three malformations constituting unrecognized teratologic… Show more

“…Bu olguda ise hareket sistemi, sindirim sistemi ve kardiyovasküler sistem anomalileri birlikte görülmüştür. Sistemlerin anomaliden bu kadar etkilenmesinin sebebi ise literatür-de [24] de belirtilen, "çoklu konjenital anomalilerde vücudun bir kısmında oluşan anomali diğerlerine de öncülük eder" şeklindeki hipotez olarak düşünülmektedir.…”

“…Polydactyly is a redundancy of digits distal to the basopodium specific for a species (Barber 1990;Alam et al 2007). Unilateral or bilateral polydactyly has been reported as a single anomaly or in combination with other congenital defects (Camon et al 1990;Talamillo et al 2005). Polydactyly has been reported in humans, horses, cattle, sheep, dogs, cats, llamas and guanaco (Al-Ani et al 1998;Clark et al 2000;Bahr et al 2003;Giofre et al 2004;Fayeye et al 2006;Sakai 2006;Altenbrunner-Martinek et al 2007;Zapata et al 2008).…”

“…Congenital abnormalities may be multiple or may affect single parts of organ systems. Multiple congenital anomalies often occur because the malformation of one part of the body leads directly to the malformation of another part (Camon et al, 1990). These anomalies are associated with genetic factors (transgenes, chromosomes), environmental agents (infections, toxins, fertilization techniques, management) or a combination of factors (Keeler et al, 1981;Rousseaux and Ribble, 1988;Newman et al, 1999).…”
