Association between age, gender and education level with the severity of periodontitis in pre-elderly and elderly patients

Abstract: Background: As individuals grow older, they may be more susceptible to chronic diseases, which can affect their overall health. Periodontitis, for instance, is one of the most common oral diseases that result from prolonged exposure to pathogens. The main etiology of periodontitis is dental biofilms, but several risk factors may also affect the progression of the disease. Purpose: The study aimed to determine whether there was an association between age, gender and education level and the severity of periodont… Show more

“…3 Gingivitis is caused by the interaction between microorganisms found in dental plaque biofilms and tissues and inflammatory cells of the host. 4 Dental plaque is a biofilm that contains a lot of bacteria and is found in both hard and soft tissues. Dental plaque is a common etiologic factor for gingivitis.…”

“…Periodontitis is a common disease in the oral cavity consisting of slow irreversible damage of the periodontal supporting tissue over a period of time. 1 It has been shown that deep periodontal pockets as a result of alveolar bone destruction are associated with an increase in tooth loss. [2][3][4] Tooth loss, especially in the anterior area, can lead to psychological issues in some patients.…”

“…1,2 Poor oral hygiene and lifestyle choices lead to the onset and progression of periodontitis, one of the most prevalent chronic inflammatory diseases in humans. 3 Periodontitis is a risk factor for a number of diseases, such as infectious endocarditis, cardiovascular disease, fatal or nonfatal stroke, premature birth, diabetes mellitus, pulmonary disease, and sinus disease. 4 The most common periodontal diseases are gingivitis and periodontitis; in gingivitis, inflammation is limited to the gingival area, whereas in periodontitis, there is a destruction of connective tissue and alveolar bone.…”
