Association between erythrocyte membrane fatty acids and biomarkers of dyslipidemia in the EPIC-Potsdam study

Abstract: Our findings suggest that triglyceride and LDL-cholesterol concentrations may be mediators that link intake and metabolism of FAs to metabolic risk.

“…The association between D5D and D6D activities and metabolic syndrome may be explained by their role in the management of insulin sensitivity and insulin resistance , as well as inflammatory markers . A direct association between higher activities of D6D and insulin resistance , BMI , fasting blood glucose , waist circumference , liver fat accumulation and triglyceride concentrations has been observed. By contrast, a higher activity of D5D was inversely associated with insulin resistance , BMI , blood pressure , waist circumference , liver fat accumulation and triglyceride concentrations , as well as with higher insulin sensitivity .…”

“…The preferred D9D substrates are palmitoyl-CoA and stearoyl-CoA leading to palmitoleoyl-and oleoyl-CoA respectively. Several studies in adults confirmed the association between estimated D9D activity and body mass index (BMI) (7,14), obesity (15), TG (16,17), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) (17), incident diabetes (18) and also cancer (19,20).…”
