Association between High miR-211 microRNA Expression and the Poor Prognosis of Oral Carcinoma

Abstract: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are non-coding RNAs that play roles in gene silencing and may be involved in tumorigenesis. miR-211 was mapped to chromosome 15q13, a locus frequently altered in cancers. The role of miR-211 in carcinogenesis has not been clearly defined, however. This study investigated the pathogenetic implications of miR-211 in oral carcinogenesis. An association was found between higher miR-211 expression and the most advanced nodal metastasis, vascular invasion, and poor prognosis of oral carcinoma. The… Show more

“…Furthermore, let7a overexpression results in the inhibition of lung cancer cell growth (19), as well as the growth of human colon cancer cells (20). recent studies have shown an association between mirna expression, such as let7 and mir-205, and the severity and poor survival in patients with head and neck cancer (21,22). Our data did not confirm a tumor-suppressor role for let7a in the pathogenesis of OScc.…”

“…Links have been found between miRNAs and numerous developmental and pathological processes [13,15] . In particular, miR-204 and miR-211 belong to the same miRNA sub-family and share the same seed sequence: miR-204 is embedded in intron 6 of the TRPM3 gene (transient receptor potential melastatin 3) and has been shown to be a key regulator in metabolism, cell death, and cardiovascular disease [16][17][18][19][20] , and miR-211 is encoded by intron 6 of the TRPM1 gene [17,21] and also been shown to play important roles in cell survival and cancer [22][23][24] . miR-204 is completely conserved between human and mouse.…”

“…miR-211 is predicted to target multiple genes, including genes involved in angiogenesis and apoptosis. An association was found between higher miR-211 expression and advanced nodal metastasis, vascular invasion, and poor prognosis of oral carcinoma [61]. Enforced miR-211 expression significantly increased the proliferation, migration, and anchorage-independent colony formation of oral carcinoma cells [61].…”
