Association between levodopa and ischemic heart disease

Abstract: Background Several studies linked the use of levodopa to an increase in homocysteine level, which can lead eventually to ischemic heart disease (IHD) in Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients. There is a lack of large population studies that have investigated the cardiovascular safety of levodopa. Objectives The main objective of the study is to investigate the one-year risk of IHD hospitalisation, all-cardiovascular hospital hospitalisation, and all-cause mortality among users of L-dopa compared with users… Show more

“…The dosage of levodopa should be progressively raised; if ectopic activity is detected, the medicine should be withdrawn or combined with an antiarrhythmic treatment, the most reasonable of which is adrenergic blockers [33]. Other antiarrhythmic medications may be effective if these are contraindicated.…”

“…Patients having PD are always on the higher risk side of the heart and brain functioning abnormalities [31][32][33]. Heart and brain relative functionality were explained in many articles [32,34,35].…”

“…First and foremost, Lewy bodies are usually seen in the brain regions that govern the system, and these regions have also suffered from neurodegeneration [ 133 ]. Furthermore, inclusions resembling Lewy bodies and neurodegenerative diseases have a direct impact on the ANS [ 165 ]. Therefore in some cases, an attempt to raise blood pressure by the carotid artery and the heart’s baroreceptors is unsuccessful because the signals are not received [ 15 ].…”
