Association between mean platelet volume and coronary artery calcification in patients without overt cardiovascular disease: an observational study

Abstract: Objective: Platelets have an important role in the pathogenesis of atherothrombosis. It has been shown that platelet size measured by mean platelet volume (MPV), correlates with their reactivity and is still regarded as an easy, useful tool for indirect monitoring of platelet activity in different situations. Coronary artery calcification (CAC) has long been known to occur as a part of the atherosclerotic process. The aim of this study was to determine whether an association exists between MPV and CAC. Methods… Show more

“…A relation was found between MPV and microalbuminuria which is an indicator of microangiopathy in patients with 2 DM (40). In the general population, a significant relationship was found between MPV and coronary artery calcification, which is a risk factor for coronary vascular events and mortality (15,41). Özlü et al (42) showed that increased MPV was established as an independent predictor of non-ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndromes (NSTE-ACS).…”

“…The volume increases in acute coronary syndrome and has been suggested as a new marker for early detection of cardiovascular risk factors such as atherosclerosis [13], metabolic syndrome [14], DM [14], arterial hypertension [15], and dyslipidemia [16]. …”

“…In comparison to smaller ones, larger platelets are associated with other markers of platelet activity, including increased platelet aggregation, increased thromboxane synthesis and beta-thromboglobulin release, and increased expression of adhesion molecules (17, 18). Elevations of MPV values have also been shown in patients with CAD, insulin resistance such as metabolic syndrome, obesity, impaired fasting glucose, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, stroke, hypercholesterolemia, and smoking suggesting a common mechanism by which these factors may increase the risk of cardiovascular disease (15, 19-22). …”
