Association between mitral valve prolapse and sudden sensorineural hearing loss: A case-control population-based study

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) and MVP using a population-based dataset. Data for this case-control study were retrieved from the Taiwan Longitudinal Health Insurance Database. In total, 3399 cases of newly diagnosed SSNHL were identified. We used propensity score matching to select 3399 comparison patients (one for every case) from the same dataset. The selected matching variables included age, sex, monthly income, geographical location, urbaniz… Show more

“…Applying functional training to the treatment of patients with sudden deafness can relax the patient’s body while reducing its sympathetic nerve excitability and negative psychological stress, thereby reducing the patient’s anxiety and depression, thereby improving the patient’s treatment effect. [ 20 ] Cognitive theory believes that people’s ability to respond to stimuli is related to their misconceptions about self-evaluation of cognitive biases in the external environment. [ 21 ] The focused solution model care enables patients to actively face the condition, which is more conducive to the recovery of patients’ psychological defense mechanism, thereby reducing the patients’ unhealthy psychology, and changing the patient’s behavior, thereby improving the patient’s treatment cooperation, so it is more conducive to the patient’s hearing recovery.…”

“…The prevalence of MVP reported in a previous case–control study in Taiwan was estimated to be 1.92% in a population of ethnic Taiwanese individuals with a mean age of 49.2 years 36 . However, their study subjects were retrieved from the Nationwide Health Insurance Database in Taiwan, and the cases were selected merely on the basis of the International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification code for MVP 38 , which might underestimate the prevalence of MVP. In the present study, 3.3% of young adults had MVP, falling toward the higher end of the range among previous population-based studies 1 , 2 , 5 , 6 , 21 .…”
