Association between serum folate levels and schizophrenia based on sex

Abstract: Aim Sex differences in serum folate concentrations are well known, but no studies have investigated the association between serum folate levels and schizophrenia based on sex. With this study in a Japanese population, we examined the difference in serum folate levels between patients with schizophrenia and non‐psychiatric controls stratified by sex. The relations among serum folate levels, plasma total homocysteine (tHcy), and serum vitamin B6 (pyridoxal) levels were also examined using data from our previous … Show more

“…Firstly, we included a total of 126 participants in this study, and this moderate sample size may have limited statistical power. Secondly, due to the metabolic and transcriptional signatures showed sexspecific in psychiatric disorders, [42][43][44][45] the sex difference may influent the results. Thirdly, the diet habit could impact the concentrations of glycerophospholipids and sphingolipids, 46 however, the effect of fasting time on metabolites might be limited.…”

“…In our study, men had significantly lower plasma folate levels compared to women. A recent study found the same result, but in the control population, not in patients with chronic schizophrenia (but 59 years old) (40). Another study found that a 12-week treatment with olanzapine versus risperidone in patients with first episode schizophrenia was associated with a decrease in folate, vitamin B12 and an increase in homocysteine only in male patients who were taking olanzapine (41).…”

“…For example, men had significantly higher values of BMI, baseline creatinine, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, triglycerides, and albumin and lower levels of folic acid and vitamin B12. However, most of these differences are well established [14][15][16]. We thus believe that our cohort more realistically represents the characteristics of both genders.…”
