Association Between Serum Uric Acid Level and Components of the Metabolic Syndrome

Abstract: Serum UA level was elevated significantly as the number of metabolic components increased. Abnormal TG had the most influence on serum UA. A prospective study is warranted to determine if the prevention or treatment of hyperuricemia affects the development of metabolic syndrome.

“…This is in agreement with previous studies, 7,20,37 which have constantly found an independent correlation between triglycerides and UA levels. Confounding factors such as BMI or WC could explain this strong association.…”

“…9 K Uric acid correlates significantly with cardiovascular risk factors. 7,32,37 What our study adds to this topic K Sub-Saharan African men have lower uric acid levels compared with Caucasian men from South Africa. K Triglycerides correlated strongly with uric acid in both ethnic groups, but remained significant only in Caucasians after adjustments.…”

“…In a second study, the prevalence of gout in the U.K. adult population was estimated to be 1.4%, with a peak of more than 7% in men aged over 75 years old (5). This trend has also been observed in studies in developing countries in Asia (6,7). Although the studies focused on gout, it is inferred that hyperuricemia incidence has also increased over the same period.…”
