Association between vasomotor symptoms and sarcopenia assessed by L3 skeletal muscle index among Korean menopausal women

Abstract: Objective: To evaluate the association between vasomotor symptoms (VMS), skeletal muscle index (SMI), and sarcopenia in menopausal women. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 295 Korean menopausal women 40 to 65 years old who underwent abdominal computed tomography during routine health checkups between January 2014 and May 2016. The crosssectional areas of adipose and skeletal muscles were measured at the L3 level using computed tomography. The SMI is defined as the sum of the skeletal muscle area (cm … Show more

“…The mean score was 12.96 ± 5.41. The score was moderate (9)(10)(11)(12)(13)(14)(15)(16) in the majority of women (58.5%), it was severe (≥17) in 21.7% and mild (5-8) in 15.1% of women. Most of the women (80.2%) had moderate to severe MRS scores suggestive of a poor quality of life.…”

“…In our study, although the total MRS score did not show any correlation with sarcopenia, somatic symptoms were significantly severe in women with sarcopenia ( P = 0.044) when compared to women without sarcopenia. Ryu et al 16 reported that vasomotor symptoms were less common in women with sarcopenia than in those without sarcopenia in 295 Korean menopausal women aged 40-65 years. Longitudinal studies are required to investigate the causal relationships and underlying mechanisms.…”

“…In addition, the paraspinal muscle index was positively associated with the prevalence of vasomotor symptoms (odds ratio 1.06; 95% confidence interval 1.01-1.11). (76) The results of another study also demonstrated a relationship between vasomotor symptoms and skeletal muscle index in Korean menopausal women. (76) Based on the research results described above, estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone can be used as options to improve the quality of life of elderly women.…”

(76) Based on the research results described above, estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone can be used as options to improve the quality of life of elderly women. However, it should also be noted that estrogen significantly affects the central nervous system.…”
