“…The patients with CKD or ESRD requiring dialysis are at high risk for ascorbic acid insufficiency and scurvy. 9 Zhang et al 10 reported that the prevalence of subclinical ascorbic acid deficiency (,0.2 mg/dL) and ascorbic acid insufficiency (0.2-0.4 mg/dL) in patients who were on hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis and not receiving supplementation was as high as 35.9% and 34.8%, respectively. Several studies also showed that plasma or serum ascorbic acid level in patients with CKD and receiving hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis was low.…”

“…Several studies also showed that plasma or serum ascorbic acid level in patients with CKD and receiving hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis was low. 4,5,[9][10][11][12][13] Regarding dietary intake of ascorbic acid in patients with CKD or ESRD, Pereira et al 14 reported that in 80% of children with ESRD, the ascorbic acid intake was lower than the recommended daily allowance (RDA). Likewise, in adult patients receiving CAPD, the daily intake of ascorbic acid was lower than the RDA.…”

“…Vitamin C level was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) (Agilent 1100 series, Agilent Technologies, USA) on a Diamonsil C18 column (150 mm × 4.6 mm, 3 μm) with UV detection according to the previously described method [12,16]. Intra-assay and inter-assay coefficients of variation were 2.7% and 2.5%, respectively.…”

“…Several other reports from Europe and Asia report a relatively high prevalence of vitamin C deficiency, though the whether this led to detrimental effects was not well described 47,48,[52][53][54] . Oral and/or intravenous vitamin C supplementation have been shown in hemodialysis patients to increase vitamin C blood levels with relative ease 47,48,53,54 .…”
