Association of lung function with declining ambient air pollution.

Abstract: Recent studies have found a declining prevalence of respiratory infections in East German children, along with a tremendous improvement of air pollution since 1990. The present study evaluates the effects of improved air quality on lung function. Three consecutive cross-sectional surveys of schoolchildren ages 11-14 years from three communities in East Germany were performed in 1992-1993, 1995-1996, and 1998-1999. Lung function tests were available from 2,493 children. The annual mean of total suspended partic… Show more

“…A negative effect of exposure to traffic-related pollution and lung function was noted. These results are consistent with findings of earlier studies (Krämer et al, 1999;Heinrich et al, 2000;Frye et al, 2003).…”

“…Children without these indoor exposure revealed higher effect sizes and had a greater benefit from the improvement of air hygiene levels than children who were exposed to at least one of these indoor pollutants [15]. The effect size estimates for FVC were also higher in children not exposed to these indoor factors [47]. These effect estimates could not be separated for SO 2 and TSP.…”

“…A decrease in levels of air pollution in former East Germany after reunification was associated with a decrease in parent-reported bronchitis 88 and improved lung function. 89 During the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia, extensive programs were implemented to improve mass transportation and decrease anticipated downtown traffic congestion. These programs were successful and were associated with a prolonged decrease in ozone pollution and significantly lower rates of childhood asthma visits during this period.…”
