Association of Mycoplasma penetrans with Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infection

Abstract: A cross-sectional study was done to determine the seroprevalence of Mycoplasma penetrans in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) type 1-seropositive and -seronegative persons recruited in France. The data were analyzed with respect to the sociodemographic, clinical, and biologic status of the patients. M. penetrans seropositivity was associated with HIV infection (18.2% of HIV-seropositive vs. 1.3% of HIV-seronegative persons were M. penetrans-seropositive; P < .001). M. penetrans infection was predominantly but… Show more

“…The profile of the LAMP fraction of Mycoplasma fermentans revealed 29, 38, 41, 61, 78, 95 and 150 kDa proteins. The bands p35 and p29 identified in this study are those referred in the literature as being specific for M. penetrans and M. fermentans (7,15,27) (Fig. 1).…”

“…Proteins of 35 and 38 kDa, the two main lipoproteins used by M. penetrans to penetrate into the host cell (3,7), are the most abundant in mycoplasma cellular surface had have highfrequency phase variation (17). Our results showed a strong immunoreactivity these two proteins and the specie specificity of 35 kDa lipoprotein as previously found by Ferris et al, (5).…”

“…M. pneumoniae and others induce depression in the immune response 65,66 , mainly of T cells, through a possible mechanism of apoptosis 67,68 , with a reduction in the CD4 T cells 69 , which may be a facilitating mechanism for other infections. This possible action of mycoplasmas, increasing the virulence of other agents, has been studied in AIDS patients 70 . Increased levels of cytokines and a low number of CD4 T cells are characteristics also present in unstable plaques.…”

“…It is obviously too early to be able to draw conclusions about whether the findings of Tsai et al bear any relevance to oncogenesis in humans. The claims of Wang et al (467) that Kaposi's sarcoma is associated with M. penetrans infection were not verified by Grau et al (165). However, oncogenesis by mycoplasmas is a topic that offers an additional dimension to the pathogenic potential of mycoplasmas and certainly deserves further study.…”
