Associations between heart rate, perceived heart rate, and anxiety during acute psychological stress

Abstract: Background: Acute psychological stress elicits increases in heart rate (HR) and anxiety. Theories propose associations between HR, perceived HR, and anxiety during stress. However, anxiety is often measured as a unidimensional construct which limits a comprehensive understanding of these relationships. Objectives: This research explored whether HR reactivity or perceived HR change was more closely associated with cognitive and somatic anxiety during acute psychological stress. Design: Two laboratory-based stud… Show more

“…Among many different physiological stress indicators, such as blood pressure, cortisol level, increased skin conductivity, and head and body movements, HRV is considered one of the reliable methods for assessing the physiological response of the body in response to stress. HRV is caused by the interaction of the sympathetic and parasympathetic parts of the autonomic nervous system and can be analyzed in time and frequency domains [6][7][8][9][10][11].…”

“…A limitation across the studies included in this review is the use of HR, sometimes exclusively, to quantify the distress or anxiety experienced by the participant during the cast room procedure. While HR has been shown to correlate with anxiety, it is not always an accurate measure [31], and does not exclusively measure anxiety which may confound results. For example, HR increased in the intervention group using video games [21].…”

“…Analyses were conducted using SPSS version 22 (IBM Corp, USA) and AMOS 22 (IBM Corp, USA). Based on recommendations of Tabachnick and Fidell (2013), data were first inspected for missing data and univariate outliers, 1 For a detailed description of these tasks, please see Trotman et al (2019). before examining multivariate outliers using the Mahalanobis distance at p < 0.001.…”
