Associations between novel single nucleotide polymorphisms in the Bos taurus growth hormone gene and performance traits in Holstein-Friesian dairy cattle

Abstract: Growth hormone, produced in the anterior pituitary gland, stimulates the release of insulin-like growth factor-I from the liver and is of critical importance in the control of nutrient utilization and partitioning for lactogenesis, fertility, growth, and development in cattle. The aim of this study was to discover novel polymorphisms in the bovine growth hormone gene (GH1) and to quantify their association with performance using estimates of genetic merit on 848 Holstein-Friesian AI (artificial insemination) d… Show more

“…For example, the leptin gene on BTA4 (Van der Banos et al, 2008), LEPR on BTA3 Banos et al, 2008), SCD on BTA26 (Macciotta et al, 2008), PGF on BTA10 (Seidenspinner et al, 2011), SPP1 on BTA6 (Sheehy et al, 2009), GH on BTA19 (Mullen et al, 2010) and GHR on BTA20 (Banos et al, 2008;Waters et al, 2011). For all these candidate genes we looked at the groups of SNPs positioned surrounding these genes.…”

“…It seems that de-regulation of translation, via the 5'-UTR sequences in TT and CT genotypes, is responsible for a significant reduction in IGF-I expression and associated to poor reproductive performance in dairy herds. Most of the previous studies conducted on the IGF-I polymorphisms with the growth traits in beef cattle breed [10,13] or milk traits [20,21] . We demonstrated an association between the CC genotype and higher concentration of IGF-I during the 14 d before calving to 45 d postpartum in Holstein dairy cows; while the cow with TT genotype had the lowest level of IGF-I.…”

“…The following PCR conditions were applied to each assay; 50 mM KCl, 10 20 min of inactivation at 65 曟. The digested PCR products were analyzed by agarose gel 3% in 1 暳 TrisAcetic Acid-EDTA (TAE) buffer.…”
