Associations between perceived environmental pollution and health-related quality of life in a Chinese adult population

Abstract: Background: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) measures are being used in increasingly diverse populations. However, there have no known studies to date to examine the associations between perceived environmental pollution and HRQoL in a Chinese population. This study aimed to report the associations between air, water, noise pollution and HRQoL among Chinese adult population. Methods: A cross-sectional survey data was used from East Asian Social Survey 2010 with a sample of 3866 Chinese populations regard… Show more

“…When people perceive themselves to be exposed to a polluted environment, their environmental experience will be reduced, and their awareness of environmental protection will be stimulated. When people perceive the quality of the surrounding environment to be degraded, they will think that environmental pollution threatens their health and reduces their quality of life, and then take actions to reduce pollution [ 46 ]. Similarly, when people have a good experience of the surrounding environment quality, their psychological comfort will be improved, and their evaluation of the government’s environmental governance behavior will also rise [ 47 ].…”

“…Seasonal and weather conditions affect physical activity and psychological states (e.g., winter season, unfavorable weather, or decreased sunlight exposure vs. the more positive alternative) (30). Air pollution represented by particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) is associated with increased respiratory symptoms and worsened HRQOL (31,32). There is also evidence to suggest that habitat may influence HRQOL.…”

“…Another study conducted in Australia found that a climate change and health course significantly increased the knowledge of nursing students regarding climate change’s effects on health [ 14 ]. Moreover, a survey conducted among nurses in China included a sample of 3866 found that environmental concerns were positively associated with psychological distress [ 15 ]. Another cross-sectional study conducted among nursing students in Italy found that concerns about the environment and climate change were significant predictors of psychological distress [ 16 ].…”
