Associations between social burden, perceived stress, and diurnal cortisol profiles in older adults: implications for cognitive aging

Abstract: Stress can be a risk factor for mental and physical health. We investigated the role of social burden as a potential stressor in older age and its associations with cognitive aging (i.e., within the domains inhibition and cognitive flexibility of executive functioning). Eighty-three older adults (N = 38 male, mean age = 74.0 ± 5.7 years, body-mass index = 25.5 ± 4.1 kg/m2) aged 64 years or older participated. Cognitive flexibility and inhibition were assessed by means of a Trail-Making Test (TMT) and a Stroop … Show more

“…Temporarily, all these physiological stress responses are adaptive. Potentially harmful consequences arise when stress becomes chronic, i.e., when long-term stress exposure occurs [e.g., 19,[26][27][28], or when so-called maladaptive stressresponse patterns are used [e.g., [29][30][31]. We refer to stress-responses patterns as being maladaptive-in contrast to adaptive [e.g., 32,33]-when they do not allow the organism to efficiently cope with or to adjust the individual's physiological responses or behavior to the situation.…”

“…In addition to the impact on economic development, the accelerated process of population aging and the decline in the working-age population will increase social burdens [41,42]. Moreover, the growing number of elderly people due to aging has given rise to a huge service market.…”
