Asthma caused by bromelin inhalation

Abstract: Summary Two cases are reported of bronchial asthma caused by inhalation of bromelin, a proteolytic enzyme utilized in some anti‐inflammatory medicines. Prick test results with bromelin extract were positive. Inhalation tests gave immediate reactions which were blocked by sodium cromoglycate, but not corticosteroids.

“…In the cases of bromelain sensitization due to exposure at work, Galleguillos and Rodriguez mentioned that none of the patients described wore any safety protection and that dust inhalation was massive [10]. The working environment of the cases described by Gailhofer et al was not elucidated more closely, but in the workers investigated, frequent and intensive contact with bromelain dust has been reported [7].…”

“…Proteolytic enzymes of plant origin, such as bromelain (pineapples) and papain (papaya), present in the form of dust, have been shown to cause allergic diseases after inhalation (Galleguillos and Rodriguez, 1978;Baur, 1979;Baur and Fruhmann, 1979a;Keenan et al, 1979;Gailhofer et al, 1988). Bromelain is extracted from fruit and leaves of plants while papain is a sulphydryl protease extracted from the latex of papaya fruit (Carica papaya).…”
