AtCRY2 Negatively Regulates the Functions of AtANN2 and AtANN3 in Drought Tolerance by Affecting Their Subcellular Localization and Transmembrane Ca2+ Flow

Abstract: Annexins are a multifunctional class of calcium-binding proteins in plants, and their physiological functions and regulation in response to drought stress remain to be elucidated. Here, we found that AtANN2 and AtANN3 conferred to drought tolerance under short-day and long-day conditions, respectively. Under their functional photoperiod, AtANN2 and AtANN3 gene expression was enhanced in the mannitol-treated roots, and their encoded proteins were rapidly targeted to the plasma membrane, and mediated significant… Show more

“…Importantly, AtANN1 which acts as a ROS-stimulated Ca 2+ channel was shown to play a major role in the eATP-induced increase in [Ca 2+ ] cyt in Arabidopsis roots [ 51 , 54 , 55 , 56 ]. AtAnn2/AtANN3-mediated Ca 2+ signaling is involved in photoperiod regulated drought stress responses [ 57 ]. Certain annexin members with peroxidase activity are shown to be involved in cellular redox reactions, e.g., when plants are exposed to stresses, annexins may suppress ROS accumulation, reduce lipid peroxidation, and regulate activities of the cell [ 58 , 59 ].…”

“…Also, cold-activated OST1/SnRK2.6 phosphorylates AtAnn1 and enhances its Ca 2+ transport activity which generates a Ca 2+ signal that mediates freezing tolerance [22]. In A. thaliana, cryptochrome 2 represses the functions of AtAnn2 and AtAnn3 by affecting their subcellular localization and transmembrane Ca 2+ flow in drought stress [23].…”
