Atmospheric blocking events in the North Atlantic: trends and links to climate anomalies and teleconnections

Abstract: Atmospheric blockings are generally associated with large-scale high-pressure systems that interrupt west-to-east atmospheric flow in mid and high latitudes. Blockings cause several days of quasi-stationary weather conditions, and therefore can result in monthly or seasonal climate anomalies and extreme weather events on the affected regions. In this paper, the long-term coupled CERA-20C reanalysis data from 1901 to 2010 are used to evaluate the links between blocking events over the North Atlantic north of 35… Show more

“…The correlation between NAO and ten extreme climate indices (TX10p, TN10p, TN90p, TNn, TNx, TXn, TXx, DTR, R × 1 day, and R × 5 day) reached a significant level in that month and its following second month. This is as the asymmetric connection between NAO and blocking circulation on the atmospheric scale has an asymmetric influence on temperature and precipitation in advance or behind [66,67]. Its lag period is about two weeks.…”

“…Thus, their high number of characteristic motifs is more likely due to the multiplicity of their geographical locations, which is consistent with their typical track that follow the jet stream from West to East. The representation of maps in terms of mixture of motifs might also shed light on teleconnections between different patterns (Agarwal et al, 2019;Wazneh et al, 2021). As an example, Figure S17 in Supporting Information S1 shows that heat waves on Europe tend to be associated with high pressure over Canada (motif H9).…”

“…Atmospheric blocking events in the north Atlantic are large highpressure systems interrupting west-to-east atmospheric flow, occurring during NAO-index. They cause days of quasi-stationary weather patterns, leading to extreme weather events and climate anomalies over Europe 54 . Therefore, solar minima are correlated to sharp increase of cold snaps, heat waves, droughts, and strong storms, as reported from past records.…”
