Atmospheric trace elements at Enewetak Atoll: 2. Transport to the ocean by wet and dry deposition

Abstract: The concentrations of trace elements in precipitation and dry deposition are presented for samples collected at Enewetak Atoll (11°N, 162° E) during SEAREX experiments in 1979. The concentrations of Al, Sc, Mn, Fe, Co, and Th in rain are dominated by crustal material, and for these elements, wet deposition evidently exceeds dry deposition. For most of these elements the present rates of atmospheric deposition at Enewetak are similar to their mean rate of accumulation in sediments over the past 5–10,000 years, … Show more

“…Following settling of the largest particles during transport, the mass-median diameter of desert dust over ocean is generally a few microns (e.g. Arimoto et al 1985Arimoto et al , 1997Dulac et al 1989;Dubovik et al 2002;Reid et al 2003a). However, a number of authors report observations of "giant" sand-sized (>62.5 μm in diameter) dust particles of aeolian origin at very long distances from sources (e.g.…”

“…In particular, LOAC data can be used to determine the concentration of large particles dominating the mass of desert dust transported and their deposition flux (e.g. Arimoto et al, 1985;Dulac et al, 1987Dulac et al, , 1992aForet et al, 2006). 3 Vertical profiles and particle size distributions of the observed dust plumes…”

“…The Sierra impactor is a high-volume device with five slotted stages plus an after-filter. It has been used routinely in the marine boundary layer (e.g., Arimoto et al, 1985;Schneider et al, 1990). Willeke (1975) performed a careful calibration, including internal losses, interactions between stages, and the effects of different impaction substrates.…”
