Atomically precise clusters of gold and silver: A new class of nonlinear optical nanomaterials

Abstract: Functional ligand-protected metal cluster nanomaterials with increased two-photon absorption and two-photon excited emission might result in new technologies within the fields of bio-imaging applications. During this article, I review the two-photon absorption/emission properties of atomically precise ligand-protected silver and gold nanoclusters, coined "ligand-core" NLO-phores. This includes quantumchemical methodologies using time-dependent density theory. I will analyze physical phenomena and trends result… Show more

“…Therefore, we call this new class of NLO materials: "Ligand-Core" NLO-phores. 51,52,54 As illustrated with ligated silver nanoclusters, the interplay between the resonance of OPA and TPA states and large transition dipole moments is essential for enhanced TPA crosssections. Large transition dipole moments are induced by a nonuniform electronic distribution in the metal core.…”

“…48 Although nonlinear optics has a long history in organic chemistry, the field of NLO in ligated noble metal nanoclusters is relatively new 49,50 , but fast-growing. [51][52][53] Due to molecular-like properties, it is expected that their NLO behaviour, in particular, their nonlinear refraction and absorption (including two-photon absorption, TPA) properties, could be understood in a way analogue to molecular materials. 52,54,55 In this feature article, we consider the current status of these investigations, with an emphasis on the joint work performed in our two groups.…”

“…In particular, the nature of capping ligands was found to affect both the charge transfer from the ligands to the metal core via the Au–S bonds and the donation of delocalized electrons of the ligands to the metal core. In contrast, the investigation of the role of ligands to the nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of Au 25 (SR) 18 is still in its infancy, and only a few studies on NLO measurements have been published. , We reported recently that the first hyperpolarizability value (β) responsible for second harmonic response was very similar between cysteine and glutathione (a cysteine containing peptide) as ligands . Verbiest and co-workers found a drastic dependence of the hyperpolarizability value on the surface ligand chirality.…”

“…Thiolate-protected metal nanoclusters (NCs) are a promising class of nanomaterials due to fascinating molecular-like properties along with well-defined molecular structures [1,2,3]. However, their physicochemical properties are highly size- and structure-dependent.…”
